As one of the 1.6 million registered 501c3 nonprofits in the United States, I recently found out that we are also a 509a2 PUBLIC Charity. Evidently, since 2014, I was a PRIVATE charity. In order to receive the 509a2 status, the IRS looks at 5 years of tax returns and determines if you are truly supported by the PUBLIC or PRIVATE funds.
As you can imagine, private funding means someone or something is funding directly to that organization to allow it to function. However, if you are a public nonprofit, you are truly funded by the public (which is much harder). It means that the public wants you to exist. The vote is in.
As a 501c3, an organization has to prove their impact, measure inputs and outcomes while also sharing where the money was spent….. and why.
