Survivor Guilt and Mental Health Impact in Widowhood
Group Support allows a safe space to discuss the hard topics.
This week I sat in a circle of widows in Melbourne, FL. We had a guest speaker, Dr. Chris in Sebastian, FL who is a veteran, young widow and urgent care physician. She discovered that almost every widow in the group had some form of survivors guilt for living longer than their spouse/ partner or even that they didn’t make all the best and right decisions for their loved one.
Awareness is so important, because many times we cannot see our thought patterns living out in our day to day mental conversations with ourselves. We were able to gently discuss all the things in the safe and non-judgmental space. We cried, we laughed, we got angry and we felt the humanity of the ineffable and immeasurable impact of community when it comes to trauma, grief, support, healing and growth.
